Friday Problem Solving

In the middle school, on Fridays, we work on our "out of the box" thinking and problem solving skills. The students are given a brainteaser to try and solve that the class then discusses afterwards. Here is what we have done so far:

August 17
What word begins and ends with an E but typically has only one letter?

August 24
Two mothers and two daughters went out to eat. Everyone ate one burger, yet only three burgers were eaten in all. How is this possible?

August 31
I can travel from there to here by disappearing, and here to there by reappearing.
What am I?

You are on an island in the middle of a lake. The lake is in a remote part of the country and there has never been a bridge connecting the island to the mainland. Every day a tractor and wagon gives hay rides around the island. Puzzled as to how the tractor had gotten onto the island, you ask around and find out that the tractor was not transported to the island by boat or by air. Nor was it built on the island. Explain how the tractor got there?

September 14
A large truck is crossing a bridge 1 mile long. The bridge can only hold 14000 lbs, which is the exact weight of the truck. The truck makes it half way across the bridge and stops. A bird lands on the truck. Does the bridge collapse?

September 21
In 2000, a 40-year-old doctor told his son that when he was a little boy he decided to be a doctor by seeing a internet web site about performing a heart transplant on a puppy with a defective heart so that the puppy would live a normal life. I then thought that I would be a doctor so that I could help people in a similar way. What’s wrong with this story?

September 28
